Is it bad for our ecosystem if I periodically spray some Raid down my sink and shower drains?
I posted about my large brown spider trouble.
The active ingredient, or one of them is allethrin, a pyrethrin insecticide.
The spiders are likely emerging from the drain because my downstairs neighbor says he periodically sprays down the drains and they don't come up in his bathroom anymore.
Thanks, I will save the Raid for when they
are actually in my bathroom moving around.
I will block the drains when they are not in use, then.
Research conducted at Oklahoma State and Texas A&M Universities has confirmed that Brown Recluse spiders are tenacious and very difficult to kill with most insecticides. Treatment of Brown Recluse spiders with pesticides is usually ineffective unless directly sprayed on the spider. However, even something as simple as water can have the same effect when sprayed directly.
At one time it was thought that pesticides had a secondary benefit in that if you destroy the Brown Recluse's food, the Brown Recluse will need to go elsewhere to live. But more recent research at Kansas University indicates that Brown Recluses actually prefer dead insects over living ones 81.4% of the time and that improper applications of pesticides can actually increase Brown Recluse spider populations. They can safely eat prey that was killed by insecticides even 24 hours before. They will also eat prey partially eaten by other Brown Recluse Spiders and prey that had been dead for 2 months. Also, pesticides can actually kill spiders that prey on Brown Recluses. For this reason, spraying could potentially be counterproductive unless your exterminator is a professional that is very knowledgeable about Brown Recluse Spiders and a full Integrated Pest Management analysis is done. However, this can get quite expensive and they will not guarantee that they can fully exterminate Brown Recluse Spiders

termite & ants, have infestation of both. was wondering whether they'll kill each other if i let both live?
will they kill each other if somehow they meet in my home? or calling exterminator or using bug spray only way?
I'm sorry, but this one really makes me grin.
If you have termites, at this very second they are causing damage to your house. Yes, this very second. It may only be a penny worth of damage every few seconds... but how long until you take care of the problem?!
If certain species of ants meet termites, they will attack with fervor. However, it's not like termites are defenseless. They have soldiers who will sacrifice themselves while behind them the workers seal the tunnel that is threatened.
Ants will eat some termites, but it's rare when they solve a termite problem.
Some ants will then begin to live in the termite's nest. Others will enlarge the nest (causing even more damage).
If you don't call an exterminator, you will be helping the construction business when they have to perform major repairs to your home. And even then you'll need to call an exterminator to get rid of the termites as replacing the wood will not solve the problem.
Find a pest control company who will offer a 5 year guarantee on termites. If they want a fee to reinspect every year - pay it.
Find a pest control company who offer a guarantee to get rid of the ants -- not reduce them, but GET RID OF THEM. It can be the same company or another one.
Get both treatments done right away.
This isn't something you can handle yourself. Depending on the type of termites you have it may take 5-300 gallons of spray or even a fumigation. Depending on the type of ants, it may take measures you aren't even aware of and can't do safely.
